  • 'Fir Ek Baar, Modi Sarkar?' At National Council Meet Today, BJP Awaits PM's 'Magic Potion' for 2019 Polls

By Morning Glory News → Saturday, January 12, 2019

Seeking a second term, Modi this year would be defending a good first innings total of 273 plus. He registered a near cent percent strike rate in states where BJP matters — in the north, west and central India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi being garlanded by BJP President Amit Shah on the first day of the two-day BJP National Executive Meet, at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi

Under the grand marquee, the invitees listened in with rapt attention. The top leaders on the stage are face to face with national council members one last time before the poll bugle is sounded in the next two months. Banners and posters urge cadres to work for 'Fir Ek Baar, Modi Sarkar'.

Rewind to 2014. At the same Ramlila Maidaan in the national capital, the then BJP Prime Minister candidate Narendra Modi addressed the council members. For the leaders who opposed him from within and his adversaries outside he had a succinct message:

“Aap chalen na chalen, desh chal chuka hai”

At the end of the party council on Saturday, Modi’s speech will be listened in with great interest in the political circles. The politician in him — like many of his ilk — has this ability to get the public pulse right to the last beat. More than that, he has since his CM days been successful in setting the agenda and forcing his adversaries to bat on a pitch of his choice.

As chief minister of Gujarat, Modi made state elections a contest between him and the Congress central leadership. The ‘Delhi Sultanate’ as he called it. In 2014, he sought a mandate to bring back ‘acche din’ after a decade of policy paralysis.

In 2019, 60 years of Congress ‘mis-rule’ would be one of the talking points which BJP leaders from top to grassroots would use to attack the opposition. Party president Amit Shah in his inaugural address has compared the upcoming polls to the battle of Panipat between the Mughals and the Marathas. But beyond that, BJP in Lok Sabha polls will also have to talk about its performance after being handed a clear mandate to govern for full five years.

Seeking a second term, Modi this year would be defending a good first innings total of 273 plus. He registered a near cent percent strike rate in states where BJP matters — in the north, west and central India.

In the last five years, the party has attempted to strengthen its position in other areas as well. We have heard of the ‘look East’ policy to erase deficit elsewhere. Sorties to the Coromandal states have not yielded much. Prime Minister has given another call to potential and current allies.

In running its first full majority government at the Centre, BJP has also sought to invest in new social blocks for electoral gains. Three decisions by the Prime Minister in this regard need special mention — demonetisation, GST and nomination of Ram Nath Kovind as President of the Republic.

The first two were economic measures with a prominent political overtone. For once, BJP was attempting to pole vault from one side of the social divide to the other. From being seen as a party of the urban and upper caste to one with an egalitarian outlook.

Ram Nath Kovind’s appointment as the President of India was another political outreach towards the Dalits.

Ahead of the elections now, BJP seems to be making calibrated changes in the polls strategy. Ten per cent reservations to the Economically Weaker Sections has been promised. Universal Basic income of people living below poverty line is reportedly in the offing.

RSS wants a temple. PM has ruled out an ordinance route for the same.

In 2014, BJP's message to the electorate was clear and condensed. The party offered hope and people latched on to it. When BJP workers return to their constituencies on Saturday evening after the national council, they would be looking for that one central message to take back to the cadre and the voters. And they would be listening closely to Prime Minister's valedictory address to pick the leitmotif of BJP's pitch for another term in office.
  • BJP National Convention Day 2 Live: PM Modi To Address Party Leaders Today

    By Morning Glory News →

PM Modi will address BJP members at the party's national convention at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.

    NEW DELHI:
On the second day of the BJP National Convention, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak to nearly 12,000 party members at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan. The party's national convention, months ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, is the "biggest ever" gathering of BJP members which comes in the backdrop of the proposed grand alliance of opposition parties.

Speaking at the national convention on Friday, BJP chief Amit Shah called the 2019 elections a "battle of ideologies" and compared it to the third battle of Panipat between Marathas and the Afghan army fought in the 1761. He dismissed the opposition parties' proposed grand alliance as a farce and said that the alliance is a disparate group that has been brought together by their greed of power.

The convention also passed a resolution on development in rural areas, even as the opposition accused the government of "betraying" farmers amid protests by various farm organisations in different parts of the country.

BJP National Executive Meeting HIGHLIGHTS: Amit Shah, while exuding confidence in the party workers, said BJP will again make the government at Centre under PM Modi's leadership. He said the party was keen on the issue of Ram Mandir but Congress was delaying it.

Addressing BJP workers from across the country at the National Executive meeting at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Friday, party chief Amit Shah expressed confidence ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and said the polls will be a battle of ideologies. The BJP will lay the final guidelines for thousands of party leaders for the upcoming elections with its two-day National Executive meeting at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Friday and Saturday. The event was inaugurated by party chief Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, in the presence of senior BJP leaders.

After the recent Assembly election rout, the party, during the convention, is likely to focus on how to bring back the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. The saffron party had lost to the Congress in the three Hindi heartland states — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Besides this, two resolutions, one on political issues and another on the economy, are also likely to be passed. The national convention will be attended by BJP national executive council members, national council members, all MPs, MLAs, MLCs, national office-bearers of all morchas among others.
  • Intermittent snowfall in Kashmir, flight operations hit at Srinagar airport

    By Morning Glory News →

Srinagar, Jan 12 (PTI) Intermittent snowfall continued in Kashmir for the second consecutive day Saturday, leading to disruption in flight operations at the Srinagar airport, officials said. However, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway the only all-weather road-link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country was through for traffic.

Intermittent snowfall continued in most parts of Kashmir for the second day, an official of the Meteorological Department here said.

He said while the plains, including Srinagar the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced light snowfall, most of the higher reaches of the state received moderate snowfall.

The snowfall has led to decrease in visibility, resulting in disruption of flight operations at the Srinagar airport.

"The air traffic to and fro Srinagar airport has been hit because of the low visibility due to continuous snowfall," an official at the airport said.

He said so far three flights were cancelled while a few others were delayed.

However, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was open for one-way traffic, an official at the Traffic Control Room here said.

The Met office has said there is a possibility of light rain and snow in many places, with heavy falls at isolated places, in the state on Saturday. It said the weather is likely to improve on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature at Srinagar settled at minus 0.8 degrees Celsius last night slightly up from the previous night's low of minus 1 degree Celsius, the official of the Met office said.

He said Qazigund the gateway town to the valley in south Kashmir also recorded a low of minus 0.8 degree Celsius, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius last night.

The mercury in Kupwara town in north Kashmir settled at a low of 0.2 degree Celsius, the official said, adding Kupwara was the only place in Kashmir where the night temperature settled above the freezing point.

Gulmarg ski-resort in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius last night, while Pahalgam tourist resort registered a low of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius.

The official said Leh recorded a low of minus 11.9 degrees Celsius last night, while the mercury in Drass settled at a low of minus 10.3 degrees Celsius and Kargil experienced the minimum of minus 16.8 degrees Celsius.

Kargil was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' the 40-day harshest period of winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum and the temperature drops considerably.

'Chillai-Kalan' ends on January 31, but the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir. The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold).

  • GM sees higher 2019 profits on job cuts, solid US, China sales

    By Morning Glory News →
General Motors projected strong 2019 profits Friday, fueled by savings from a deep restructuring including job cuts, and by solid sales in the United States and China. GM, which has faced criticism from President Donald Trump and other US politicians over the planned layoffs, expects 2-2.5 billion in additional profits this year due to the restructuring, pushing its earnings-per-share forecast well above analyst expectations.

New York, Jan 11 (AFP) General Motors projected strong 2019 profits Friday, fueled by savings from a deep restructuring including job cuts, and by solid sales in the United States and China. GM, which has faced criticism from President Donald Trump and other US politicians over the planned layoffs, expects 2-2.5 billion in additional profits this year due to the restructuring, pushing its earnings-per-share forecast well above analyst expectations.

The biggest US automaker forecast 2019 profits of 6.50 to 7.00 a share, compared to the USD 5.88 now expected by Wall Street analysts. GM also said it sees 2018 earnings per share as exceeding analyst expectations.

GM has defended the job cuts as needed to position the company long-term, in part by providing funds to build autonomous cars and other new offerings.

"We are focused on strengthening our cash generation and creating efficiencies that will position us to take advantage of opportunities through the cycle," Chief Financial Officer Dhivya Suryadevara said in a statement.

Shares of the auto giant surged 8.0 percent in morning trading to 37.52.

The auto giant also announced plans in 2019 to position its electric cars under the Cadillac brand and to launch a new global line of lower-cost models aimed at emerging markets.

Global markets have been shaken in recent weeks amid worries over slowing global growth due in part to weakness in China amid the trade confrontation with Washington, and to some forecasts indicating the US will tip into recession in 2020.

But GM offered a solid outlook for its home market, estimating overall US sales in 2019 in the "low 17-million range," a good level, and projecting no sales drop in China.

US auto sales are expected to be revved up by new sport-utility vehicles coming to market, and by a full calendar year of sales of pickup trucks unveiled in 2018 that have been hot sellers amid low gasoline prices.

The company plans new launches in China, although it also sees continued pricing pressure. Overall, GM expects a "moderate decline" in profits from China, Suryadevara told reporters GM Chief Executive Mary Barra was upbeat on the prospects for a US-China trade deal, characterizing this week's talks between US and Chinese officials as "constructive." According to news reports the next round of talks is set for late January in Washington.

Barra told reporters it was a "good sign" that the two governments already had plans for additional negotiations, adding that sales in China also could be boosted by government stimulus spending.

GM in December announced a plan to cut thousands of jobs and shutter seven plants worldwide, including five in North America.

The announcement drew heavy criticism not only from Trump, but from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, labor unions, senior lawmakers in the US Congress and labor unions.

Barra said the company has no plans for further downsizing at this time.

The automaker said Cadillac would become its "lead" electric brand, a shift from the current structure where the first models have been under Chevrolet. The move positions GM to compete with Tesla in the high-end market.

GM said it was on track to launch in 2019 a new global vehicle aimed at emerging markets, beginning in China, followed by South America and Mexico. The vehicles are expected to account for 10 percent of GM's global sales by 2020. (AFP)PMS

Jammu, Jan 11 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir BJP Friday termed former IAS officer Shah Faesal's remarks at his press conference earlier in the day a "bundle of lies" and motivated.
"The press conference of Faesal is a bundle of lies. His statement is not only false but motivated to create a wedge in the peacefully living society," state BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi said.

He has chosen to play in the hands of forces inimical to India, Sethi claimed.

Faesal, who quit the Indian Administrative Services recently, had told reporters the circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir and in the rest of the country made him realise that this was the time to speak up.

"By the resignation, I am putting across a small act of defiance to remind the central government of its responsibilities towards the people of J&K...to protest the lack of political initiative to assuage the hurt feelings of people of Kashmir," Faesal, who had topped the civil services exam in 2010, told reporters.

He said he would not join any mainstream political party "as of now" but may contest the upcoming parliamentary election.

The state BJP spokesperson responded to his remarks, saying, "It is this great country which gives opportunities to ungrateful persons like Shah Faesal to top prestigious civil services, because here merit is counted rather than belief in religion."

"Anybody has right to enter politics but politics which has foundation on deceit and misinformation will never pay," Sethi added.

  • Google wins round in fight against privacy right to be forgotten globally

By Morning Glory News → Friday, January 11, 2019
Google shouldn’t have to apply the so-called right to be forgotten globally, an adviser to the EU’s top court said in a boost for the US giant’s fight with a French privacy regulator over where to draw the line between privacy and freedom of speech.

Google shouldn’t have to apply the so-called right to be forgotten globally, an adviser to the EU’s top court said in a boost for the US giant’s fight with a French privacy regulator over where to draw the line between privacy and freedom of speech.

While backing Google’s stance, Advocate General Maciej Szpunar of the EU Court of Justice said that search engine operators must take every measure available to remove access to links to outdated or irrelevant information about a person on request. The Luxembourg-based court follows such advice in a majority of its final rulings, which normally come a few months after the opinions.

Google has been fighting efforts led by France’s privacy watchdog to globalise the right to be forgotten, which was created by the EU court in a landmark ruling in 2014, without defining how, when and where search engine operators should remove links. This has triggered a wave of legal challenges.

The Alphabet Inc. unit currently removes such links EU-wide and since 2016 it also restricts access to such information on non-EU Google sites when accessed from the EU country where the person concerned by the information is located -- referred to as geo-blocking. This approach was backed by Szpunar.

“Public access to information, and the right to privacy, are important to people all around the world, as demonstrated by the number of global human rights, media and other organizations that have made their views known in this case,” said Peter Fleischer, Google’s senior privacy counsel. “We’ve worked hard to ensure that the right to be forgotten is effective for Europeans, including using geolocation to ensure 99 percent effectiveness.”

CNIL, France’s data privacy regulator, declined to comment.

France’s highest administrative court sought the EU tribunal’s guidance in 2017 about whether the right to be forgotten could be extended beyond the EU. In a second case, it asked questions about the obligations of search engine operators when faced with delisting requests of links to sensitive data, such as sexual orientation, political, religious or philosophical opinions and criminal offenses, that “is embedded in a press article or when the content that relates to it is false or incomplete.”

    ‘Private life’

The advocate general on Thursday in that case said that for requests concerning sensitive data, search engine operators “must weigh up, on the one hand, the right to respect for private life” and data protection rights, and “on the other hand, the right of the public to access the information concerned” and the freedom of expression.

The US company has been asked to delete links to 2.9 million websites, after the EU court effectively put the search engine in charge of deciding what requests to accept. It has agreed to less than half of them. People unhappy with Google’s refusal to remove a link can turn to privacy regulators.

While the right to be forgotten concerns all search engines, Google’s dominance in Europe means the company has taken center stage.

Many will mistake it for an espresso machine but it’s so much more, let’s say, desirable. Already the winner of CES 2019 Innovation Award, LG’s HomeBrew is your personal craft beer maker for home. It uses capsule-based inputs and optimised fermentation algorithms (all coded in) to churn out a tasty batch of beer every time.

All you need to do is put in a set of single-use capsules that contain malt, yeast, hop oil and flavouring, and press a button. The whole procedure -- fermentation, carbonation, aging and even cleaning -- will happen on its own. The machine is optimised to intelligently set the temperate and pressure settings, and comes with a companion app that lets you check on your batch of beer from practically anywhere.

The sad part is that the beer takes two weeks to cook and users can’t simultaneously start another batch. The output is five litres, or roughly 10 pints of beer.

“LG HomeBrew is the culmination of years of home appliance and water purification technologies that we have developed over the decades,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company, in a press note.

“Homebrewing has grown at an explosive pace but there are still many beer lovers who haven’t taken the jump because of the barrier to entry and these are the consumers we think will be attracted to LG HomeBrew.”

For now, LG hasn’t revealed the price HomeBrew or how much the capsules will cost, but has got people interested by flavors it plans to launch initially-- American IPA, American Pale Ale, English Stout, Belgian-style Witbier and Czech Pilsner.
  • Addicted to Facebook, Twitter? Here's what a new study has to say

    By Morning Glory News →
Questions on the survey asked about users' preoccupation with the platform, their feelings when unable to use it, attempts to quit and the impact that Facebook has had on their job or studies

Excessive use of social media platforms like Facebook can make its users take decisions as bad as drug addicts tend to do, a new study suggests.

"Around one-third of humans on the planet are using social media, and some of these people are displaying maladaptive, excessive use of these sites," said lead author of the study Dar Meshi, Assistant Professor at Michigan State University in the US.

"I believe that social media has tremendous benefits for individuals, but there's also a dark side when people can't pull themselves away. We need to better understand this drive so we can determine if excessive social media use should be considered an addiction," Meshi added.

For the study, published in the Journal of Behavior Addictions, the researchers had 71 participants take a survey that measured their psychological dependence on Facebook, similar to addiction.

Questions on the survey asked about users' preoccupation with the platform, their feelings when unable to use it, attempts to quit and the impact that Facebook has had on their job or studies.

The researchers then had the participants do the Iowa Gambling Task, a common exercise used by psychologists to measure decision-making.

To successfully complete the task, users identify outcome patterns in decks of cards to choose the best possible deck.

Meshi and his colleagues found that by the end of the gambling task, the worse people performed by choosing from bad decks, the more excessive their social media use.

The better they did in the task, the less their social media use.

People who abuse opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, among others - have similar outcomes on the Iowa Gambling Task, thus showing the same deficiency in decision-making, the study said. (Source-IANS)
  • Twitter users in China facing governmental threats

    By Morning Glory News →
The Chinese government has a reputation for its periodic crackdown on all things internet. In the latest effort, Twitter users in China are being interrogated for posting content critical of the government.

The Chinese government has a reputation for its periodic crackdown on all things internet. In the latest effort, Twitter users in China are being interrogated for posting content critical of the government.

One Twitter user in China was reportedly interrogated by the police for eight hours, while some users are facing threats and even detention for days after posting critical messages. The users are demanded to delete critical posts or their accounts.

As Cnet reports, the crackdown is said to be part of President Xi Jinping's campaign to censor content posted online in the country.

Twitter is currently banned in China, however, people use software to access the popular microblogging site. As per estimates, only about 0.4 percent of China's users are hooked to Twitter. However, given the potent nature of the platform, it often fuels political debate and discussion in the country.(Source- ANI)
  • US official says troop withdrawal from Syria has started

    By Morning Glory News →
After days of back and forth over US President Donald Trump's decision to pullout American troops from Syria, a US military official said Friday the process of withdrawal has begun, declining to comment on specific timetables or movements. Col Sean Ryan, spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, said "the process of our deliberate withdrawal from Syria" has started.

Baghdad, Jan 11 (AP) After days of back and forth over US President Donald Trump's decision to pullout American troops from Syria, a US military official said Friday the process of withdrawal has begun, declining to comment on specific timetables or movements.
Col Sean Ryan, spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, said "the process of our deliberate withdrawal from Syria" has started.

"Out of concern for operational security, we will not discuss specific timelines, locations or troops movements," the Baghdad-based official said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

There were no other details, and it was not immediately clear how many vehicles or whether any troop units had withdrawn.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict in Syria through a network of activists on the ground, said the withdrawal began Thursday night. It said a convoy of about 10 armored vehicles, in addition to some trucks, pulled out from Syria's northeastern town of Rmeilan into Iraq.

Confirmation of the first withdrawals comes amid confusion over plans to implement Trump's pullout order and threats from Turkey to attack the Kurds, who have been America's partners on the ground in the war against the Islamic State group in Syria.

There are 2,000 American troops in Syria. Trump's abrupt decision in December to pull them, declaring in a tweet the defeat of IS, sent shockwaves across the region and a flurry of criticism from some of his generals and national security advisers, and led to the resignation of US Defense Minister James Mattis and the top US envoy to the anti-IS coalition. It also led to major criticism that the US was abandoning its local Kurdish allies amid Turkish threats of an imminent attack.

On Sunday, US national security adviser John Bolton said American troops will not leave northeastern Syria until IS is defeated and American-allied Kurdish fighters are protected, signaling a slow-down in Trump's initial order for a rapid withdrawal.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is on a tour of the region, has also sought to reassure the Kurds that they will be safe after U.S. troops withdraw from the country.

"These have been folks that have fought with us and it's important that we do everything we can to ensure that those folks that fought with us are protected," Pompeo said of the Kurds while visiting Irbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, after talks in Baghdad.

After initially tweeting about the decision to bring back US troops "now," Trump this week said "we will be leaving at a proper pace while at the same time continuing to fight ISIS and doing all else that is prudent and necessary!" Kurdish officials, meanwhile, have demanded clarifications from the US over its intentions.

A US troop pullout leaves the Kurds exposed to Turkish attacks from one side, and Syrian government troops on the other. The withdrawal benefits Syrian President Bashar Assad and his international backers, Russia and Iran, who are primed to move into the region to fill a vacuum left behind by the Americans.

US troops have been involved in Syria's war since 2014 when the first elite force arrived in the country to advise Kurdish-led fighters who were involved in battles against the Islamic State group. (AP) MRJ

  • Pompeo takes US anti-Iran message to Gulf Arab states

    By Morning Glory News →
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brought the Trump administration's anti-Iran message to Gulf Arab states on Friday, arriving in Bahrain to continue a nine-nation tour of the Middle East aimed at reassuring America's partners that withdrawing troops from Syria does not mean Washington is abandoning the region.

Cairo, Jan 11 (AP) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brought the Trump administration's anti-Iran message to Gulf Arab states on Friday, arriving in Bahrain to continue a nine-nation tour of the Middle East aimed at reassuring America's partners that withdrawing troops from Syria does not mean Washington is abandoning the region.

Pompeo was travelling to Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates where he will call for increasing pressure on Iran and push for unity among Gulf neighbors still embroiled in a festering dispute with Qatar. He'll also be promoting a U.S.-backed initiative to form what some have termed an "Arab NATO" that would bring the region together in a military alliance to counter threats from Iran.

In Bahrain, the UAE and later Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait, Pompeo will also be making the case as he did on previous stops in Jordan, Iraq and Egypt that President Donald Trump's decision to pull US troops from Syria is not a sign Washington is retreating from the fight against the Islamic State group.

US partnerships with the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council "are critical to achieving shared regional objectives: defeating ISIS, countering radical Islamic terrorism, protecting global energy supplies, and rolling back Iranian aggression," the State Department said in a statement released as Pompeo departed Egypt for Bahrain, which is home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet.

But the now 2-year-old crisis between GCC members Saudi Arabia and UAE and Qatar has hampered US attempts to forge a unified front against Iran. Washington's efforts to ease the dispute, begun by former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have thus far failed and took another hit this week when the former general tasked to broker a solution stepped down.

"A united GCC is the backbone for regional peace, prosperity, security, and stability, and is essential to countering the single greatest threat to regional stability: the Iranian regime," the State Department said.

At each of his stops in the Gulf, Pompeo will be urging progress on creating the Middle East Strategic Alliance, which would join GCC militaries with those of Egypt and Jordan to serve as a counter-balance to Iran, which they all accuse of fomenting unrest and rebellion throughout the region.

Pompeo told Fox News before departing from Cairo that there would be an international conference on Iran and the Middle East in Poland on February 13-14.

Pompeo during his trip will also call for boosting efforts to end the conflict in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been battling Iranian-backed rebels in what the UN says is now the world's worst humanitarian crisis, the department said.

UN-led peace efforts in Yemen, along with attempts to broker a political solution to the war in Syria that "expels every last Iranian boot from the country" and promoting reconciliation in Afghanistan will also be high on Pompeo's agenda, the State Department said.

Pompeo kicked off the Gulf portion of his tour after a stop in Cairo, where he delivered a scathing rebuke of former President Barack Obama's Middle East policies that Obama had outlined in a 2009 address to the Arab and broader Muslim world.

In a speech entitled "A Force for Good: America's Reinvigorated Role in the Middle East," Pompeo accused the former president of "misguided" thinking that diminished America's role in the region while harming its longtime friends and emboldening Iran.

He unloaded on the Obama administration for being naive and timid when confronted with challenges posed by the revolts that convulsed the Middle East, including Egypt, beginning in 2011. And, he said the Trump administration was taking action to repair the damage.

"The age of self-inflicted American shame is over, and so are the policies that produced so much needless suffering," Pompeo said in the speech, which was itself denounced by former Obama administration officials for pandering to autocrats, ignoring human rights concerns.

"That this administration feels the need, nearly a decade later, to take potshots at an effort to identify common ground between the Arab world and the West speaks not only to the Trump administration's pettiness but also to its lack of a strategic vision for America's role in the region and its abdication of America's values," National Security Action group, a group of former officials, said in a statement.

Pompeo blamed the previous administration's approach to the Mideast for the ills that consume it now, particularly the rise of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and Iran's increasing assertiveness, which he said was a direct result of sanctions relief, since rescinded by the Trump administration, granted to it under the 2015 nuclear deal.

He said Obama ignored the growth of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon to the detriment of Israel's security and not doing enough to push back on Iran-supported rebels in Yemen.

Since withdrawing from the nuclear deal last year, the administration has steadily ratcheted up pressure on Tehran and routinely accuses the nation of being the most destabilising influence in the region. It has vowed to increase the pressure until Iran halts what US officials describe as its "malign activities" throughout the Mideast and elsewhere, including support for rebels in Yemen, anti-Israel groups, and Syrian President Bashar Assad. • Thai police: Canada, Australia willing to accept Saudi woman

    By Morning Glory News →
Several countries including Canada and Australia are in talks with the UN refugee agency to accept a Saudi asylum seeker who fled alleged abuse from her family, Thai police said Friday. Thailand's immigration police chief, Surachate Hakparn, told reporters the U.N. was accelerating the case, though he gave no indication of when the process would be complete.

Bangkok, Jan 11 (AP) Several countries including Canada and Australia are in talks with the UN refugee agency to accept a Saudi asylum seeker who fled alleged abuse from her family, Thai police said Friday.

Thailand's immigration police chief, Surachate Hakparn, told reporters the U.N. was accelerating the case, though he gave no indication of when the process would be complete.

Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun was stopped at a Bangkok airport on Saturday by Thai immigration police who denied her entry and seized her passport.

While barricading herself in an airport hotel room, the 18-year-old launched a social media campaign via her Twitter account that drew global attention to her case. It garnered enough public and diplomatic support to convince Thai officials to admit her temporarily under the protection of UN officials.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees eventually granted her refugee status on Wednesday.

Alqunun's case has highlighted the cause of women's rights in Saudi Arabia. Several female Saudis fleeing abuse by their families have been caught trying to seek asylum abroad in recent years and returned home. Human rights activists say many similar cases have gone unreported.

By Friday, Alqunun had closed down her Twitter account. Sophie McNeill, a reporter with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation who has had exclusive access to Alqunun, said Friday in a Twitter posting that Alqunun "is safe and fine." "She's just been receiving a lot of death threats," McNeill wrote, adding that Alqunun would be back on Twitter after a "short break." Alqunun had previously said on Twitter that she wishes to seek refuge in Australia.

Australia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne met with senior Thai officials in Bangkok on Thursday. She later told reporters that Australia assessing Alqunun's request for resettlement, but there was no specific timeframe.

Payne said she also raised Australia's concerns with Thai officials about Hakeem Al-araibi, a 25-year-old former member of Bahrain's national soccer team, who was granted refugee status in Australia in 2017 after fleeing his homeland, where he said he was persecuted and tortured.

Hakeem's case is being considered by Thailand's justice system, she said. (AP) MRJ

  • Ghosn hit with more charges, release unlikely

    By Morning Glory News →
Tokyo prosecutors on Friday filed two new charges of financial misconduct against former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, meaning the auto tycoon is unlikely to be leaving his jail cell soon. Lawyers for the former jet-setting executive filed a bail application hours later, but have acknowledged that he will probably be detained until a trial.

Tokyo, Jan 11 (AFP) Tokyo prosecutors on Friday filed two new charges of financial misconduct against former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, meaning the auto tycoon is unlikely to be leaving his jail cell soon.
Lawyers for the former jet-setting executive filed a bail application hours later, but have acknowledged that he will probably be detained until a trial.

Ghosn denies any wrongdoing and argued in a dramatic first court appearance on Tuesday that he has been "wrongly accused and unfairly detained."

He was already facing a first charge for allegedly under-reporting his compensation over five years to the tune of five billion yen (USD 46 million) in official documents to shareholders.

The charges filed today allege that the under-reporting continued for another three years.

And they include a charge of "aggravated breach of trust" over a complex alleged scheme in which Ghosn is said to have tried to transfer losses on foreign exchange contracts to Nissan's books.

As part of the scheme, he is accused of also using company funds to repay a Saudi acquaintance who put up collateral for the contracts.

Prosecutors also filed charges Friday against Nissan and Ghosn aide Greg Kelly over the additional three years of under-reporting pay.

"We took these steps today because we believed that they are cases worthy of indictment and going to trial," said deputy chief prosecutor Shin Kukimoto.

A prosecutor's office spokeswoman said charges against Ghosn carry a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.

The breach of trust charge is regarded as particularly serious, and Ghosn's lawyer Motonari Otsuru admitted Tuesday it would be "very difficult" to secure bail for his client.

"In general in such cases in Japan, it is indeed the case that bail is not approved before the first trial does take place," he said, adding that it could be six months before the case comes before a judge.

Ghosn has appeared in public just once since his shock November 19 arrest, during the Tuesday court hearing called after his lawyers requested judges explain the tycoon's ongoing detention.

One of the most recognisable foreign executives in Japan, Ghosn was led into Tokyo District Court in handcuffs and with a rope around his waist and was noticeably thinner.

He spoke in a strong voice and said he had acted "honourably, legally and with the knowledge and approval of the appropriate executives inside the company".

The judge said his ongoing detention was justified because he poses a flight risk and could tamper with evidence if released.

A request filed the same day by his lawyers to end his detention was rejected.

Ghosn's prolonged detention has put the spotlight on Japan's justice system, which has come in for some international criticism.

With each allegation against Ghosn, prosecutors can seek up to 22 days of detention to investigate the claims - the period for the aggravated breach of trust allegation expired Friday.

And with each formal charge, prosecutors can hold Ghosn for two months of pre-trial detention, which is renewable.

The jet-setting high-flyer who once sparked criticism for his lavish lifestyle has gone from spacious digs in international capitals to a one-man cell.

He was initially held in a small room with traditional Japanese tatami floor mats to sleep on, but has now been moved to a larger cell with a Western-style bed.

He has reportedly complained about the rice-based diet at the detention centre, with his family saying he has lost up to 20 kilos (44 pounds).

This week he suffered a fever that prompted prosecutors to suspend their interrogations, though his lawyer said Friday that Ghosn's temperature had gone back down.

The arrest of the 64-year-old has exposed rifts in the alliance he forged and led between Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors and France's Renault.

While the two Japanese firms quickly ousted him from leadership roles, Renault has kept him on and its board said Thursday that an ongoing audit has found no sign of fraud in the last two years.

Nissan said Friday it has filed its own criminal complaint against its former chief "on the basis of Ghosn's misuse of a significant amount of the company's funds." It said it took the charges filed against the firm "extremely seriously" and was continuing its investigation into the case. (AFP) MRJ
