The Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, has raised serious concerns regarding the increased military presence of the Russian armed forces in the Arctic region. She said the region plays an important role in terms of trade, communications, and defence, and that the Arctic is "no longer insulated from the world's geopolitical tensions."
Addressing the European Parliament plenary, the vice president stated, "Russia is expanding its military footprint in the High North. Moscow has reopened Soviet-era bases and is testing new weapons in the region."
The Arctic has become a frontline of global power competition. The EU’s updated Arctic strategy reflects this new reality by putting security firmly at its core. Europe will bolster its role in the High North by: 🔹 strengthening surveillance and satellite monitoring, 🔹 better protecting critical undersea infrastructure via an Arctic Cable Hub, 🔹 expanding Europe’s icebreaker capacity, 🔹 investing in new technologies fit for extreme environments, 🔹 improving military mobility.
